About the project
The project DISCOVER PEACE IN EUROPE offers what you want to know about civil engagement, peace and democracy.
This website presents smart Peace Trails in seven European cities: Berlin, Budapest, Manchester, Paris, The Hague, Torino and Vienna. These Peace Trails offer discoveries: monuments, buildings and locations that you may have seen before, but now they disclose stories about people and activities with rich engagement for human rights, peace and democracy that took or take place - unknown to most of us.
We want to draw awareness to peace matters. Since the 19th century peace movements have emerged throughout our cities, but seldom with public attention. In an outdoor learning process facts and stories on the peace trails present an important aspect of the history of our civil society and democracy. Most monuments in our cities display "heroes of wars", but peace and human rights are hardly ever subjects for a memorial culture. This discrepancy will become obvious, thus promoting personal reflections on one's own participation. - Only a change in thinking will bring about change in actions ... .
Peace depends on the people. Participation is the indispensable condition for the development of democracy. The peace trails offer information, suggestions and opportunities for an active engagement in democracy building, social competences and peace matters.
Movimento Internazionale della Riconciliazione is the Italian partner that has created the Torino Peace Trail. MIR is a spiritual based movement, founded in 1952, as the Italian branch of IFOR (International Fellowship of Reconciliation), and it promotes peace, active nonviolence and reconciliation. During the past decades MIR has also actively contributed to the legal recognition in Italy of the conscientious objection to military service. Today MIR continues to campaign in favour of disarmament and for the promotion of a culture of peace and nonviolence, working together with local associations and international ones as well.
Torino, elegant and discreet, Italy's first capital, city of factory workers, city of Resistance, city of peace. We propose a unique experience to have a different look at buildings, squares, sites, museums and organization headquarters which tell about human rights, democratic participation, non-violence, solidarity and much more.
Each trail counts 15 locations which allow you as well to personalize the experience according to your personal interests and needs, either changing the order proposed or shortening the number of sites to visit if you run out of time.
Please take notice that the displayed distances between the station on the map view are calculated in minutes walking from one peace trail station to another. Opening a station's content view you will be able to see a proposed faster route to the next peace trail station, which also offers public transport information.
We invite you to visit also the dedicated page on www.miritalia.org to get supplementary materials about the topics addressed and suggestions of additional sites to discover and build peace in the city.
Enjoy your peace trail!
